Moving to Florida - becoming unemployed in Florida

The system of benefits in the US is unlike anywhere else in the world. If you become unemployed in Florida then you will need to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

This is a system offering partial reimbursement to those who have lost their job although not everyone is eligible for unemployment insurance. You will not be able to claim immediately after moving to Florida.

Moving to Florida - Unemployment Insurance (UI)

Unemployment Insurance (UI) is designed to protect those who have become unemployed in Florida through no fault of their own. It is funded almost exclusively by federal and state taxes on employers. Payments are made at an average of 50% of previous after-tax earnings.

Each individual state has the power to set eligibility criteria and benefit levels. The maximum period for the unemployed in Florida to receive payments is 26 weeks.

Problems with unemployed insurance for those moving to Florida

Unemployment insurance is only available for workers in certain jobs. There is a number of other requirements which must be met before someone becomes eligible for UI.All states require a worker to earn a minimum amount during the previous year to qualify. Workers moving to Florida may not qualify for some time as the current and most recently completed quarters of employment are usually excluded when determining eligibility.

Unemployed insurance claimants must be available for and actively seeking full-time work, even if they were only working part-time prior to becoming unemployed in Florida. As a result, low-waged, part-time and temporary workers are less likely to qualify after becoming unemployed in Florida.

How to claim after becoming unemployed in Florida

The Agency for Workforce Innovation is responsible for deciding who will receive unemployed insurance in Florida. It normally takes about four weeks for a claim to be processed. Claims can be filed online or by calling 1-800-207-2418.
